A Reflection from Bishop Joseph

last week felt very privileged and blessed to attend the Mass of Canonisation for St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and the other five proclaimed as saints.

The Mass of Thanksgiving on Monday at the Basilica of St. Paul's was also a wonderful occasion for those who had travelled from Australia, Canada, Scotland and many other places to thank God for St. Mary MacKillop's life and example, and for many also it was an occasion to acknowledge her prayerful intercession before the Lord on their behalf.

We followed in her footsteps around Rome, visiting places she had lived and prayed in, and hearing of those who helped as she sought the necessary approval for her congregation - not least the rector of the Scots College, Fr Grant, who had been a colleague of her father as a seminarian, and Pope Pius IX, who received her so graciously and encouraged her to persevere.

We now look forward to our Masses of Thanksgiving here in the Diocese, on Sunday  31 October in Roy Bridge and here in Oban on 17th November, and we pray that St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop, whom we proudly see as one of our own, may continue to inspire us in our own lives of faith and commitment to the Lord.

In regard to the trip to Rome I offer a special word of thanks to Srs Audrey and Therese, especially on behalf of the group who travelled with them under the fine care of Anthony Coles, and but also on behalf of all the Scottish pilgrims for whom they provided the tickets for the Saturday Vigil, and the Masses of Canonisation and Thanksgiving. Their presence with us was a special link with St. Mary MacKillop herself and with all who had travelled from Australia and New Zealand. So thank you, Sisters, for all you have done for us.
